Lessons From a Long Plane Trip

If you have been reading any of my posts this month, you are aware that I've spent the past 3 weeks in Asia. During this time I have poured into other leaders but have also learned from so many others. One of the things I learned is that lessons can be found just about anywhere we look.... when we are open to receive them.

On the 24 hours (total) flying time back to the USA, I watched a whopping 2 movies. One of them was a movie I heard about but wasn't familiar with at all - Guardians of the Galaxy 2. In this movie I found some cool nuggets / reminders to think about... and also to share.

Nugget #1

One of the biggest problems we face is passive and absentee Fathers (within our immediate families but also within the "Church").

In the movie Yondu told Quill, “He may have been your father but he wasn’t your daddy.”

1 Corinthians 4:15

For even if you were to have ten thousand teachers [to guide you] in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers [who led you to Christ and assumed responsibility for you], for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the good news [of salvation]

Nugget #2

Leaders need to gain a special sense of awareness

Quill said, “Sometimes, the thing you’ve been looking for your whole life, is right there beside you all along.”

We need to be constantly looking for potential and then nurturing that potential to the full. Our greatest asset and blessing are those whom God has already sent. Be faithful to serve them.

Nugget #3 (My friends in business / coaching and ministry pay close attention)

Names Matter!

One of the funniest scenes is where the raccoon is giving Taserface a tough time. "Sorry, I'm so sorry, I just keep imagining you waking up in the morning, looking in the mirror and in all seriousness to yourself saying 'You know what would be a really kick-a%@ name? Taserface!'. That's how I hear you in my head! What was your second choice?

The words we use, the names we give our systems really do matter. They need to be complimentary to the goal, purpose and heart of what we are trying to communicate.
